Rooibos: The New Wonder Tea

By now, most people have heard about all the health benefits of tea. Like green tea’s high levels of polyphenols, which have been linked to lower heart disease risk, cancer, and inflammatory issues, or oolong’s amazing ability to lower cholesterol levels. But, there is a new tea in town, and it has proven itself to be a unique superfood. I am talking about Rooibos tea. For centuries, South Africans have enjoyed Rooibos tea for its taste and medicinal properties, and now this health-packed tea has become a popular choice across the world.

While most teas (green, black, and oolong) are derived from the Camilla Sinensis plant (a shrub native to China and India), Rooibos tea is grown only in the Cedarberg region of South Africa, and is made from the leaves of the red bush plant, or Aspalathus Linearis. While both plants offer significant amounts of antioxidants and health benefits, Rooibos tea is now being hailed as a wonder tea, due to it being naturally decaffeinated, and free of tannins associated with those from the Camilla Sinensis plant.

Along with being caffeine-free, Rooibos tea is full of health boosting phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and polyphenols. A few of them are

  • Iron – to carry oxygen to the blood
  • Potassium – for proper cell function
  • Magnesium – to regulate muscle and nerve function
  • Sodium – to maintain healthy fluid balance and nerve impulse conduction
  • Zinc – important for healthy skin, eyesight, and cognitive function

On top of being packed with these vital nutrients, Rooibos rates extremely high in antioxidants, the powerful substances that fight free radicals.

In recent studies, Rooibos has been found to help balance the metabolism, preventing obesity and diabetes. Not only does it boost the metabolism without stimulants, it has shown promising results in balancing hormones, as well as numerous other conditions that tend to go along with imbalances, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome.

Rooibos has also been found to reduce insomnia, tension headaches, migraines, and irritability. Because this tea lacks caffeine, drinkers are finding that a cup before bed has helped them relax and relieve tension. We love Rooibos tea and all the amazing benefits it possesses, and that is why it is one of the eight SUPERFOOD ingredients in our SMILE and DAZZLE bars! We use only Fair Trade Rooibos tea, which we then added to coconut nectar to add a natural, healthy sweetness to our delicious bars.

What is Coconut Nectar?

So, what IS coconut nectar you might be asking? Raw coconut nectar, or palm nectar, comes from the sweet sap of the thick, flowering stems of the coconut blossom. This sap is reduced using low temperatures, producing a thick, nutrient-dense, low glycemic, pourable syrup. Coconut palms have been tapped for this sweet nectar for centuries, and now it has become a popular alternative to natural sweeteners because of its pleasant taste and added health benefits.

It contains low amounts of glucose, sucrose, and fructose, and is released slowly into the blood stream, making it safe for diabetics, and it is also high in prebiotic fibers, which aid in digestion. Coconut nectar is also high in enzymes, as well as amino acids, minerals and vitamins, which are important for bodily functions and transporting nutrients. Amino acids make up our cells, tissues and muscles and are essential for tissue repair. Coconut nectar contains 17 amino acids (nine essentials plus eight nonessential):

  • Tryptophan
  • Lysine
  • Histidine
  • Arginine
  • Aspartic Acid
  • Threonine
  • Serine
  • Glutamic Acid
  • Proline
  • Glycine
  • Alanine
  • Valine
  • Methionine
  • Isoleucine
  • Leucine
  • Tyrosine
  • Phenylalanine

Coconut nectar is the perfect, raw, natural sweetener loaded with nutrients, minerals and fiber, making it the perfect ingredient to blend and create our Rooibos coconut syrup for our delicious DAZZLE and SMILE superfood bars!
